Summer camp is often remembered for the fun—games, field trips, crafts, and outdoor adventures. But beyond the excitement and laughter, camp is also a place where children grow in meaningful ways.
At Toronto Kidz Camp, our programs are intentionally designed to help children build confidence, develop friendships, and try new things in a supportive environment.
While campers may come home talking about their favourite activities or new friends, they are also developing important life skills along the way.
Here are some of the valuable skills children develop during their time at Toronto Kidz Camp.
1. Independence & Confidence
Camp gives children the opportunity to build independence in a supportive environment. Even at a day camp, campers spend much of the day making decisions on their own and learning to take responsibility.
At Toronto Kidz, children practice independence through daily routines, transitioning between activities, and participating in field trips, group challenges, and outdoor games. These experiences help children feel more confident and capable.
At camp, children practice:
Taking responsibility for their belongings
Following daily routines
Trying new activities independently
Contributing to their group

2. Teamwork & Empathy
At Toronto Kidz Camp, many activities involve working together. Through group games, challenges, and creative projects, campers learn how to collaborate and support one another.
Through teamwork, children learn how to:
Encourage and support others
Respect different perspectives
Work toward shared goals
Celebrate group achievements
These shared experiences also help children develop empathy as they learn to understand and support their peers.

3. Social & Communication Skills
Camp is a great place for children to build friendships and feel comfortable being themselves. Because campers often come from different schools and neighbourhoods, camp provides opportunities to meet new people and expand their social circles.
Throughout the day, campers practice important communication skills such as:
Introducing themselves to new peers
Expressing their ideas and opinions
Listening to others
Navigating friendships and group dynamics
These experiences help children become more confident communicators and build friendships that can last well beyond the summer.

4. Resilience & Adaptability
Trying something new can feel challenging at first, but camp encourages children to step outside their comfort zones in a positive and supportive way. Whether it’s learning a new activity, participating in a group challenge, or adapting to a new environment, campers are constantly experiencing new situations.
Through these moments, children develop:
Confidence in facing challenges
Persistence when things don’t go as planned
A willingness to try new things
These experiences help children build resilience — the ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep trying.

5. Leadership & Decision-Making
Camp provides many opportunities for children to develop leadership skills and practice decision-making.
Leadership at camp can appear in many ways, such as:
Helping organize a game or activity
Supporting teammates during challenges
Sharing ideas during group discussions
Taking initiative during activities
At Toronto Kidz Camp, campers are encouraged to share ideas, support one another, and contribute to group activities. These experiences help children build confidence in their ideas while learning how to work collaboratively with others.

6. Creativity & Exploration
Camp environments encourage creativity and exploration. At Toronto Kidz, campers participate in daily craft projects and themed activities, which allow campers to express themselves, explore their interests, and try new ideas.
Creative activities help children:
Express themselves
Explore new hobbies and interests
Think creatively when solving problems
Develop curiosity and imagination
For many children, camp is where they discover interests or passions that they continue exploring long after summer ends.
